Pop In The 1970s

This page includes pop as well as the teen idols of the 70s. The Jackson Five taught us our "ABC"s, Olivia Newton-John asked us if we'd never been mellow, Karen Carpenter's sweet alto was all over the airwaves, and the Osmonds bounded about the stage in their white jumpsuits. Helen Reddy sang what would become the anthem of the women's liberation movement, and Barry Manilow sang about a girl named Mandy. Here are some links to the best pages on some great pop acts of the 70s, and also a sound file or two! You must have Real Audio v 5.0 or greater installed to hear the sound files. Get Real Audio Player here if you don't have it.

Remember these artists?

The Osmonds...This family from Utah hit it big with "One Bad Apple", and would rule the teen idol roost for a good chunk of the decade. Even had a cartoon series, which I never missed! :) Donny and Marie also teamed up for recordings and a very popular TV variety series.

The Jackson Five ...Michael, when he still had his original nose, and some GREAT music! They too had a cartoon series! In fact I remember watching theirs, too, it came on right after the Osmonds. the difference is that the Osmonds did their own speaking voices and recorded songs specifically for it, and the J5's was voiced by actors.

The Carpenters ...We've only just begun... Karen's heartbreaking alto was taken from us all too soon.

Olivia Newton-John ...This Aussie lass won our hearts with songs like "Please, Mister, Please" and "Have You Never Been Mellow?". Later, she'd star with John Travolta in the megahit "Grease".

Helen Reddy ...Her "I Am Woman" would become the anthem of the women's liberation movement. She also had hits like "Angie Baby" and "Ruby Red Dress (Leave Me Alone)". She's still performing today.

The DeFranco Family ...Younger brother Tony was groomed to be the next Donny Osmond. And with his longish wavy dark hair, bright brown eyes and sparkling smile, kinda looked like Donny, too! They had a hit with "Heartbeat (It's A Lovebeat)". The one and only page I could find on them!

Barry Manilow ...Barry started out playing piano and singing with Bette Midler. That's until he broke out on his own with "Mandy".

Gilbert O'Sullivan ...This Irish singer with the lilting tenor voice had hits with such songs as "Alone Again, Naturally" and "Claire".

The Captain And Tennille ...They sang that "love will keep us together..." and I guess it has, because they're still married, and making beautiful music together. Although "Muskrat Love"... nah, forget it, I won't comment! ;)

Elton John ...Captain Fantastic himself!

Three Dog Night ...Jeremiah was a bullfrog...

Bay City Rollers ...Sing along now... S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y Night!!

Andy Gibb ...Another wonderful talent taken from us all too soon. This is the official memorial site.

David Cassidy/The Partridge Family ..."...hey, I think I love you!..."

Shaun Cassidy... David's younger half brother, he had hits with such songs as "Da Do Ron Ron" and "Hey Deanie". He also starred opposite Parker Stevenson on the popular "Hardy Boys" TV series. What a cutie!

Me And You And A Dog Named Boo

"...I've got a brand new pair of roller skates, you've got a brand new key..."
