1970s Fashion
Fashion in the 1970s...Midi skirts, leisure suits, polyester and platforms! Far out man! Here, we'll explore a little bit of fashion and fads in the 1970s.
FASHION
Leisure suits, usually top stitched in a contrasting color with large patch pockets and paired with bell bottom slacks tight in the crotch, and
tight fitting body shirt with an open butterfly collar and six inch platform shoes. There were also leisure suit styles for women as well.
Colors grew louder and wilder, and if it was a patterned shirt, the designs could sometimes be eccentric. Wearing a matching vest optional. Oh, and don't forget your gold medallion to show off that manly chest under that open collar! :)
If you wore ties, they were wide, dude! Very wide! And bowties were also big enough so that you would take flight with the proper wind!
For ladies, hot pants and midi skirts were big, and dresses were loose and ruffly for that "toga" look. Peasant style blouses and skirts also were a craze.
Ladies also liked big hoop earrings (hoops are making a comeback by the way!) and head kerchiefs. Those went well with that peasant look. As the disco craze heated up, tube tops became cool, and flared skirts and dresses. Take a look at the picture of John Travolta and Karen Lynn Gorney from "Saturday Night Fever" for an idea of how one might have dressed to go out to the disco.
Unisex was big too... it wasn't uncommon to see ladies dressed like their boyfriends in matching tees, belled jeans, or suits.
Also remember... Candies, Hush Puppies, Dr. Scholl's Exercise Sandals and earth shoes?
HAIRSTYLES
Feathered hair, shags, the "Hamill wedge", long and straight, long and curly, short and curly, upswept... for men... long sideburns, slicked back, long, short, all ultra cool in the 70s!
