Here are some brief little newsflashes of noteworthy events of the 1970s by year.
1970
The first postal strike halts mail service
Apollo 13 astronauts radio in the famous "Houston, we've had a problem."
Four students are killed during a protest at Kent State University when
National Guardsmen fire into the crowd.
"Midnight Cowboy" wins an Oscar for best picture, even with it's X rating.
Simon and Garfunkel win the Best Song Grammy for "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
1971
"Patton" wins the Oscar for best picture
The Ed Sullivan show is cancelled
"Godspell" opens.
Jim Morrison dies.
Walt Disney World opens in Orlando Florida.
George Harrison's two benefit concerts for Bangladesh
are held at Madison Square Garden.
1972
Richard M. Nixon becomes the first U.S. president to visit China.
"The Godfather" opens.
The Democratic National Committee headquarters at the
Watergate Hotel in Washington D.C. is broken into.
Nixon signs a strategic arms limitations agreement on a visit to the Soviet Union.
Mark Spitz wins seven gold medals at the summer Olympic Games in Munich.
Meanwhile at the games in Munich, Arab terrorists take Israeli athletes hostage.
Woodward and Bernstein break the Watergate story, reporting that
the "burglary" was staged on behalf of the President.
The last of the NASA moon flights, Apollo 17 is launched.
Nixon wins the 1972 elections in a sweep of 49 states.
1973
Marlon Brando refuses his Oscar as a gesture of support for the Indians of the
Wounded Knee reservation. His note of refusal is read by Sacheen Littlefeather.
Comet Kohoutek is discovered.
Official cease-fire in Vietnam.
The Washington Post is awarded a Pulitzer Prize for its investigation into the Watergate cover-up.
"American Graffiti" opens, starring Cindy Williams, Ron Howard, Richard Dreyfuss and Paul LeMat.
Secretariat becomes the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years.
In the "Battle Of The Sexes" tennis match, Billie Jean King beats Bobby Riggs.
Singer Jim Croce is killed in a plane crash.
Arab oil embargo begins in October.
1974
Arab oil embargo is lifted in March.
Patty Hearst is kidnapped.
At ten years old, Tatum O'Neal becomes the youngest Academy Award winner
in history for her portrayal of Addie Pray in "Paper Moon".
Hank Aaron ties Babe Ruth's home run record.
Nixon resigns.
Ford pardons Nixon
"The Brady Bunch" ends it's prime time run, going into rerun heaven.
Ford grants conditional amnesty to Vietnam draft evaders.
Karen Silkwood is killed after her car crashes enroute to a meeting with
a New York Times reporter after she discovered unsafe conditions
at the nuclear power plant in Oklahoma where she worked.
1975
Gerald Ford proclaims an end to the "Vietnam Era".
Stevie Wonder's free concert at the Washington Monument on 5/10/75 attracts 125,000 fans.
"Jaws" opens.
Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, Manson Family member, attempts to assasinate President Ford.
Jimmy Hoffa is reported missing.
Patty Hearst is captured by the FBI 19 months after her kidnapping.
Another attempt to assasinate President Ford. This time it's Sara Jane Moore.
"The Thrilla In Manilla" pits Joe Frazier against Muhammad Ali.
It's a brutal 14 rounds before Frazier throws in the towel.
Saturday Night Live premiers on NBC.
Ford visits China.
1976
George Bush is named head of the CIA.
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak found Apple Computers.
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show" opens.
"All The President's Men" opens.
270 Air France passengers are held hostage when Israel
launches a raid on Uganda's Entebbe airport.
America's Bicentennial is celebrated.
Indira Ghandi resigns as Prime Minister of India.
1977
Studio 54 opens in New York City.
Menachem Begin starts his term as Prime Minister of Israel.
"Star Wars" opens.
Elvis Presley dies.
Cheryl Ladd replaces Farrah Fawcett on the popular "Charlie's Angels".
"Close Encounters Of The Third Kind" opens.
"Saturday Night Fever" opens.
Leonid Brezhnev is named President of the Soviet Union.
1978
"Annie Hall" wins best picture Oscar.
David Berkowitz, aka "Son Of Sam" pleads guilty to murders in New York.
First class postage is raised to 15 cents.
"Grease" opens.
The quarter look alike, the Susan B. Anthony dollar
is introduced and soon discontinued.
John Wayne Gacy is arrested.
Golda Meir dies.
John Paul I dies a month after becoming pope.
1979
Three Mile Island nuclear disaster.
Margaret Thatcher becomes Britain's first female Prime Minister.
Jane Byrne becomes the first female mayor of Chicago.
"No Nukes" concert held.
Steve Dahl instigates the famous "Disco Sucks!" riot at Comiskey Park in Chicago.
The Sony Walkman is introduced.
Ronald Reagan announces his candidacy for President.
Iranian hostage crisis begins when the U.S. Embassy in Tehran is overtaken for 444 days.
